Digital strategy and portfolio management.

Nibor NEXT helps governments and businesses choose which digital initiatives go ahead, and makes sure those choices hold: with one overview, clear owners and a fixed moment to adjust course.

Sound familiar?

  • A

More projects are running than the organisation can carry, and stopping one feels like losing.

  • B

The management team gets a proposal per project, but never the whole picture.

  • C

Last year's roadmap is in a drawer. Nobody knows how much of it still holds.

  • D

Budget is divided per department, while the projects cut across departments.

What we do

We start with the goals of the organisation. Only then do we look at the projects.

  • Overview: all running and planned initiatives on one list, with goal, owner, cost and status.
  • Choosing: criteria for what goes ahead, what waits and what stops, set by the people who decide.
  • Roadmap: the chosen initiatives in an order the organisation can handle.
  • Decision rhythm: fixed moments when the portfolio is discussed and adjusted.
  • Set-up: the roles, meetings and information portfolio management needs, including the information model and the tooling.
  • Digital strategy: the direction on a few pages, so everyone knows why these choices were made.

Legend

Portfolio management
Steering on the whole set of projects and initiatives rather than on each project separately. What do they deliver together, do they fit the budget and capacity, and what do we stop?

From practice

Portfolio management at a large municipality (ongoing)

We designed an information model for portfolio management with fourteen entities and seven phases, as the basis for overview and steering. On that basis the management team took a decision on the tooling, and building a first version has started.

Always business-led

What you get from us depends on the question in your organisation. Sometimes that is a roadmap, sometimes fully established portfolio management. We always start with the business: which choices need to be made, and by whom? The tooling comes after that.

Questions

What is the difference between project management and portfolio management?

Project management makes sure one project runs well. Portfolio management decides which projects you do and in what order.

Does this work with agile or SAFe?

Yes. Portfolio management works with traditional projects and with agile ways of working, for example with epics and a portfolio backlog.

Can you run portfolio management for us temporarily?

Yes, as interim portfolio manager, PMO or epic owner. See interim management.

Do you also choose the tooling?

We help define what the tooling must do and guide the choice. Setting it up is done by your own organisation or a supplier.
